FARO CITY CENTRE TO THE AIRPORT AND FARO BEACH VIA MONTENEGRO

 PROXIMO BUS ROUTE 16

TIMES BELOW ARE FROM THE OFFICIAL TIMETABLE. THESE BUSES ARE NOT WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE. BIKES NOT ALLOWED.

The local Proximo (urban bus) route 16 runs from the Bus Station (outdoor annex) to Aeroporto (Airport) and Praia de Faro. Complete timetable on the official website here. Picture of the Próximo station entrance here - note an ATM there. Only use this with a card not in Euros if desperate! They will offer a lower exchange rate and charge a commission. There is a small air-conditioned waiting room with café. Journey time to the airport is 20 minutes.  Buses have on board wifi so you do not need to be off line for even a moment!!proximo bus

These buses can be VERY busy and crowded. If you must be at the airport at a certain time, I advise being at the stop in Faro bus station 10 minutes at least before the departure time to ensure you can get on.

Buses highlighted in green run only on weekdays except in summer when they run every day. Buses highlighted in blue run only at weekends and on public holidays. All other buses run every day, all year.

Departures on route 16 at 0500, 0600, 0700, 0800, 0830, 0900, 0930, 1010, 1050, 1115, 1200, 1215, 1250, 1330, 1410, 1505, 1550, 1635, 1745, 1830, 1930, 2000, 2040, 2140, 2205, 2300, 2345. The buses at 0500, 0600, 2300 and 2345 do not go through Montenegro.

First bus to Faro beach (Praia de Faro) is the 0700. Arrival there is 5 minutes after the airport. Last bus to Faro Beach is the 2205.

If you are unlucky with the bus times, there is a taxi rank at the Bus Station. A taxi to the airport will cost you about €10 on a weekday, €12 at weekends or public holidays.

Buses from the airport also stop outside the Railway Station about 1 minute after leaving the bus station. The stop at the station is across the square to the right as you exit the station, in front of a tall apartment block. However I recommend you walk the 2 minutes to the bus station and board there. At busy times the bus will leave the bus station full and may not stop to pick up on the way.

Buses also stop outside the Forum Algarve shopping centre, across the road for the bus stop for services from Loulé, Quarteira, Vilamoura and Albufeira. If you are tight for time and don't mind crossing a busy road, you can make your connection here. Otherwise your bus takes you into town and some time later your bus to the the airport  will take you back the same way. Buses stop at the Forum Algarve about 5 minutes after leaving the Bus Station.

FARO AIRPORT TO THE CITY CENTRE (Terminal) - PROXIMO BUS ROUTE 16

Destination is normally shown as Terminal or Avenida. The bus stop is outside the Airport terminal Departures area, to the left of the arrivals area as you exit the terminal building, under the concrete roof like structure.

Journey time is about 20 minutes. Most buses leave Faro beach (Praia de Faro) 5 minutes before the time at the airport, first bus from there is at 0725. Last bus from Praia de Faro is at 2230.

Buses highlighted in green run only on weekdays except in summer when they run every day. All other buses run every day, all year.

Departures from the airport on route 16 at 0520, 0620, 0729, 0830, 0905, 0935, 1005, 1044, 1105, 1135, 1205, 1250, 1335, 1400, 1440, 1505, 1620, 1710, 1810, 1910, 2005, 2035, 2115, 2215, 2235, 2320, 0010. The buses at 0520, 0620, 2320 and 0010 do not go through Montenegro.

Again, if you are unlucky with the bus times there is a taxi rank to the right when you are outside the terminal. A taxi to the train or bus station will cost about €10.

PROXIMO ROUTES 14 AND 15 FARO BUS STATION via SUBURBS to AIRPORT

Route 14 is a 'peak time' only bus that will take you to Montenegro and the Forum Algarve, then it makes its way around the ring road to Atalaia and eventually to the Bus Station. Journey time Airport - Bus Station is 30 minutes. Route 14 operates more frequently in summer to provide additional service to the airport and beach (Praia de Faro). Official timetable - external link in new tab or window

Route 15 runs a circular route infrequently and irregularly between the bus station and airport via various suburbs - timetable here.

Heading on from Faro?

Going to Spain?

There is direct service to and from Huelva and Seville in Spain.  Operated by two different companies, around ten journeys in total every day in summer, reduced to four or five each day for the winter. For details please see this page.

For journeys to Spain, you CANNOT buy tickets at the airport. You must therefore obtain them on line at the relevant company website or app before travelling.

Going to somewhere in the Algarve?

Aerobus 56 (six times a day in summer, only twice a day in winter) runs to Albufeira, Lagoa, Portimão and Lagos.
Bus 55 runs to Almancil, Quarteira and Vilamoura six times a day but only on weekdays during the winter.
Local buses run into Faro city centre for the bus and railway stations. Details above.

For other destinations and at most times go to Faro railway station or Faro bus station (the local buses stop outside both) and then go by train or another bus.

Faro city centre map showing location of bus and rail stations. Diagram of urban bus routes in Faro here - external link.

Allow plenty of time at Faro bus station when buying a ticket, which you do inside at the ticket office.  You can buy tickets on line for buses to other towns operated by VAMUS via their app which can be downloaded at www.vamusalgarve.pt - you have to set up an account before tickets can be purchased that way. VAMUS buses do not take contactless payments.

On arrival at the Faro Bus Terminal from the airport, you must otherwise buy your next bus ticket at the ticket window inside the building. Allow at least 10 minutes for this, as queues are often long and there is always someone in front of you with a complex transaction.

Faro railway station is 150 metres from the bus station in the same street. Buses to and from the airport and most of those to / from Albufeira stop outside the railway station but not the others.
