Obviously this page is not about the Algarve! I have created it as an add-on to my Algarve trains page.

Different types of train have different fares

AP - Fast Alfa Pendular train. More expensive than the IC (Intercidades) trains. Reservation is compulsory on all AP (Alfa Pendular) and IC (Intercidades) trains.
Tickets can be purchased at the CP website or using the Comboios de Portugal app or their approved re-seller omio.com up to 60 days in advance. Or at the station on the day, if seats are available.
Do not use websites like RailNinja!
 IR - inter-regional train. No reservations available. REG - regional train. No reservations available. The price is always the same whether purchased in advance or on the day.
Anyone aged 65 or older can travel half price. ID e.g. passport number required at the time of purchase and which must be carried on the journey.

Other IC trains are available between Lisbon Santa Apolónia, Oriente and Coimbra-B.
Other regional (REG) and local (Urbanos) trains run between Coimbra-B, Aveiro and Porto. Reservations not available. Check times at https://www.cp.pt/

MFO – Mondays to Fridays (weekdays) only; does not run on Saturdays, Sundays or Holidays
SUN – runs on Sundays and some Holidays only SHX – does not run on Sundays or Holidays
Not Sat – runs every day except Saturdays XXX - does NOT run Saturday night / Sunday morning.

Check on the official website for your exact date of travel especially if planning to travel around major holidays
Trains do run on all holidays but may be cancelled or altered. Sometimes this information is not published until a few days beforehand!

Notes about stations (A) to (D) here

Connections to and from Évora and Faro are made at Lisbon Oriente. This is normally on the same platform, but do check.

OTHER NOTES

The 0958 connection at Lisbon Oriente for Évora is available Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays only

Faro - these trains run between Porto Campanhã and Faro via Lisbon Oriente, Tunes, Albufeira and Loulé. They stop at Lisbon Entrecampos station 8 minutes after / before Oriente. You can change trains at Oriente for a connection by local train to or from Santa Apolónia. Those options will be offered during the booking process.

(A) - Lisbon Oriente is close to Lisbon Airport. Metro connection available. Separate ticket needed, can only be purchased at the station on the day.

(B) - Coimbra-B station is 1.5km from the city centre. A free bus service runs to and from the old city centre station of Coimbra.

(C) - Porto Campanhã station is 3km from the city centre. A frequent service of local trains runs between here and Porto São Bento in the city centre. AP and IC tickets are valid at no extra cost. Metro connections are also available - see www.metrodporto.pt for details. Porto metro also serves the airport, direct from and to Campanhã. Separate tickets are needed for metro trains. These you can only buy at the station on the day. Campanhã railway station is adjacent to the bus station of the same name.

(D) - VAL is Valença do Minho, GUIM is Guimarães. * From Valença except on Sundays. The train from Lisbon does not go to Valença on Saturdays. There is no connection available.
